TSC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Macharia announced her impending retirement during the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Annual General Meeting on December 10th.
Macharia, appointed in 2015 and reappointed in 2020, will conclude her ten-year tenure at the helm of the Commission early next year.
In her address, Macharia expressed gratitude to KNUT for their professionalism throughout her tenure. “I have no words to express my appreciation for the utmost professionalism you have demonstrated,” she stated.
She highlighted the frequent consultations between TSC and KNUT, including over 10 exclusive meetings and numerous informal interactions.
“Sincerely, I have no words to express my most profuse appreciation to Knut for the utmost professionalism with which you have dealt with me over the last nine years. As I approach the tail-end of my ten-year service as secretary and CEO of the TSC, I can only look back with an incredible tinge of satisfaction over our enviable work relationship in the office,” she said.
“I wish you the very best as you work to elevate the teaching profession to even higher standards.”
A Career in Education
Dr. Macharia, a trained teacher, began her career at Kahuhia Girls’ Secondary School in Murang’a County after graduating from Kenyatta University with a Bachelor of Education in English/Literature. She subsequently served as Deputy Headteacher at Kianderi Girls’ Secondary School.
Joining TSC as a staffing officer, she steadily rose through the ranks to become the first female CEO of the Commission. Dr. Macharia holds a Master’s degree in Education from Bristol University and has undergone extensive training in various fields relevant to education leadership.
Challenges and Achievements
Macharia’s tenure has seen both challenges and achievements.
- Disagreements with KNUT: Notable disagreements with KNUT arose over the implementation of the competency-based curriculum (CBC) and career progression guidelines (CPGs).
- CBA and Health Insurance: A significant achievement was the signing of the first collective bargaining agreement between teachers and the employer. Additionally, TSC introduced comprehensive health insurance coverage for teachers.
