UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and Safaricom have launched the second edition of the #BongaForLife campaign to protect and empower forcibly displaced women and girls and their host communities from gender-based violence (GBV).

According to data, GBV affects 1 in every 3 women globally and can have devastating consequences for survivors and their families. Refugee women and girls are especially at risk of rape, sexual assault, and exploitation, especially during emergencies that cause mass displacement.

“Gender-based violence is a serious challenge for forcibly displaced people, and UNHCR is committed to their well-being and safety. Through the #BongaForLife campaign, we ask individuals and businesses in Kenya to donate their Bonga Points to help us provide the necessary support for rebuilding lives shattered by this violence,” said Caroline Van Buren, UNHCR Kenya Country Representative.

Supporting the #BongaForLife campaign is part of Safaricom’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” said Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC.

“#BongaForLife is a call to solidarity, and we urge everyone to join us in mobilizing support to help provide critical medical and psycho-social services for the affected women and girls.”

UNHCR celebrity and digital influencer supporters in Kenya helped amplify the campaign in 2022.

This year, they are encouraging their audience to donate their Bonga Points.

The supporters include Mercy Masika, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Pinky Ghelani, UNHCR High Profile Supporter, and other UNHCR celebrity supporters, such as Dr. King’ori, Crazy Kennar, Lynn Ngugi, and Biko Adema.

In 2022, the campaign raised over 30 million Bonga Points, which supported over 1,800 displaced families and their host communities affected by the severe drought in the Horn of Africa.

The second edition of the #BongaForLife campaign will run throughout December 2023 and into 2024.
