So far this year, the bond market, consistent with the global market’s trend, has been largely bearish. In fact, benchmark rates including the two and ten-year papers have so far this year risen by 151bps and 83bps respectively. The upward pressure reflects primarily, rising inflation expectations and to some degree, an aggressive domestic borrowing stance by the sovereign. Somalia’s former leader Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been elected president. He defeated the incumbent president, Mohamed Abudallahi Farmajo. Farmajo has been in office since 2017. Mr Mohamud received 214 votes, defeating Mr Farmajo who won 110 votes out of 328 MPs who cast their votes.  Hassan Sheikh Mohamud will serve as Somalia’s president for four years, returning to the role he held between 2012 and 2017 before he was defeated by Mr Farmajo.
