Josephine Okui Ossiya is the new CEO of the Capital Markets Authority of Uganda. She takes over from Mr. Keith Kalyegira, who has held the office since 2013 when he replaced Mr. Japheth Katto, the authorityโs first CEO, who served for 16 years.
Ms Ossiya is an experienced accountant, having been a partner at Rona & Partners Certified Public Accountants.
Her career in finance, audit, treasury management, risk management, general management, and board governance spans over two decades.
She now makes history as the first female CEO of the CMA, joining an embarrassingly male-dominated board of 7.
Before her appointment, Ms. Ossiya had been the chief financial officer of Bujagali Energies Limited since November 2014.
She has also served on the board of the Central Bank of Uganda since February 2018.
She initially served as the chief finance officer and head of finance at ATC Ghana from May 2012 to August 2014.
Before that, she had served as finance director at Eskom Uganda from July 2008 to May 2012. She alsoย worked as the financial controller at Standard Chartered Bank Uganda from January to June 2008.
Ossiya has also served as corporate treasurer and later financial controller at Shell Uganda, now Vivo Energy.
She has also served as an auditor at British American Tobacco Uganda, the National Social Security Fund, and the National Water and Sewerage Corporation.
She also sits on the board of Britam Holdings Ltd. and is the chairperson of the Audit Committee of the council at Busitema University.
Josephine Okui Ossiya holds an MBA in Business Administration from the University of Liverpool and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Makerere University.
She is a member of several professional bodies, including the internal auditorsโ institutes of Uganda and the US, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants Uganda, and is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
Earlier this year, she was elected the first female president of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) for a term of two years.
A week earlier, Josephine Okui Ossiya had been vetted by parliament to serve on the board of the Bank of Uganda after being reappointed by President Museveni.
The Capital Markets Authority of Uganda said it is confident that Ms. Ossiyaโs experience and leadership will continue to propel the organization forward, building on Mr. Kalyegiraโs legacy and leading the Ugandan capital markets toward a bright future.
