Safaricom has launched the Connect Academy, a training program designed to address the shortage of skilled fibre optic technicians in Kenya.

The Connect Academy was unveiled at the Connected Africa Summit 2024. It aligns with Safaricom’s commitment to invest in robust fibre optic networks and the government’s expansion of internet access.

As part of the Presidential DigiTalent Programme, a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), the academy will focus on skill development, mentorship, training, certification, and fostering innovation in the ICT sector.

The program targets young Kenyans who need higher education, providing them with employment and career development opportunities in the growing field of broadband connectivity.

The initial cohort of 200 participants will begin training in May. They will receive full-day sessions every Friday for three months led by Safaricom engineers.

“Our target is to grow a world-class broadband connectivity talent pool for public and private sectors in partnership with TVETs. This will create employment and a career path for Kenyan youth who lack higher education,” said Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, Chief Consumer Business Officer at Safaricom.

Safaricom will also collaborate with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to integrate fixed broadband training into their curriculum, further expanding the skilled workforce.

Launched in partnership with the ICT Authority, the Connect Academy will initially operate as a training program and eventually transition into a comprehensive academy.

The program will offer in-depth training to develop highly skilled fibre optic and fixed wireless technicians, equipping them with theoretical knowledge, hands-on experience, and practical skills for successful network deployment.

Stanley Kamanguya, CEO of the ICT Authority, praised the partnership with Safaricom.

“This academy aligns perfectly with our plan to collaborate with the private sector to achieve our digital transformation goals,” he stated.

“We recognize the need for private sector involvement, and Safaricom’s initiative sets a strong example. Together, we can empower people and create a more connected Africa.”
