Dominic Ongwen, a former Ugandan child soldier and rebel commander, has been moved to a Norwegian prison to serve his 25-year sentence for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Ongwen was convicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2021 for his role in atrocities committed by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in northern Uganda between 2002 and 2005.
The court announced on November 9, 2023, that Norway had agreed to enforce Ongwen’s sentence under its supervision and by international standards.
The ICC thanked Norway for its voluntary cooperation in this case.
“The ICC relies on the support from states for the enforcement of its sentences and is highly appreciative of the voluntary cooperation of Norway in this case,” the statement from the Hague-based ICC reads in part.
