Econet Wireless, a leading telecommunications and technology company in Zimbabwe, has launched the country’s first Embedded Subscriber Identity Module (eSIM) service for both prepaid and postpaid customers.

The technology offers convenience by providing customers with additional choice and flexibility.

An eSIM is a digital SIM card embedded in a customer’s smartphone, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card. This technology enables users to have dual or multiple phone numbers on a single device.

“Our desire is to enable a seamless customer experience for our subscribers’ evolving needs. We have spent significant time testing this new technology and we are excited to roll it out to our customers,” Econet said.

The introduction of eSIM technology, which is increasingly being adopted globally due to its security and environmental benefits, aligns with Econet’s digital transformation strategy.

Customers can check if their device is compatible with eSIM technology by dialling *#06# to access their ‘Embedded Identity Document’ (EID). If their device is compatible, they can proceed to the nearest Econet shop with their original personal identification document (ID) to get their new eSIM activated for free.

eSIM Service is more secure than physical SIM cards as they cannot be accessed from the outside.

They also make it easier for customers to transfer their data to a new device and are environmentally friendly as there is no waste disposal needed, unlike physical SIM cards.
