The Communications Authority, through the Universal Services Fund (USF), has the mandate to enhance access to communications services in various parts of the country, especially in the un-served and underserved areas, which are mostly remote and hard to reach.

At the same time, CA is responsible for managing the country’s numbering and frequency spectrum resources, administering the Universal Service Fund (USF) as well as safeguarding the interests of consumers of ICT services.

Having successfully implemented the first phase, the Authority is now in the process of implementing the Phase II of the mobile connectivity project targeting 101 unserved and underserved sub-locations spread across 19 marginalized counties in Kenya.

So far, 20 sites in 20 sub-locations have been finalized with 15 now active. Out of the 15 active sites, 14 are in West Pokot County with residents now enjoying the transformation brought about by mobile communications services.

Apart from Akiriamet, the others are Kases, Kiwawa, Meshau, Lotokum, Kola, Ompolion, Kaptolomwo, Kachawa, Amaler, Emboasis, Kokwoptorir, Marus, and Pkpogoh.

The towers were constructed by the American Tower Corporation (ATC) which has rolled out passive infrastructure for the deployment of mobile network services.

The completion of the 14 sites, now brings the total sub-locations connected in the County to 19, after five others were considered in Phase I.

Residents of West Pokot now have every reason to smile as they are now able to connect and communicate with each other as well as other parts of the country without the constriction of the internet and connection.

The connection of schools in the region to the fast-speed internet has also improved education uptake and performance in the region as students are able to keep up with the ever-changing technology, do research and connect with the rest of the world.
