The Kenyan Section of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ Kenya) has confirmed Ms Elsy Chemurgor Sainna as Executive Director.

In a statement issued Friday, Kelvin Mogeni, ICJ Kenya chairman said her appointment became effective 1 April 2021, a position she was serving in an acting capacity. She takes over from Mr Abdul Noormohamed whose tenure as the Executive Director ended on December 31, 2020.

“She possesses experience and skills in leadership, management, strategy development, with a proven track record in advocacy, establishing and maintaining partnership, programme and project design,” said Mogeni. 

Elsy has extensive knowledge and expertise in public international law, trial observation of genocide cases referred in Rwanda’s national courts on behalf of the U.N International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, human rights, gender studies, constitutional, policy and legal reform.

Elsy is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and holds a Master of Laws (LLM) degree with distinction in International Legal Studies. 

She is a recipient of the Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship from Georgetown University Law Center, Washington DC. 

She earned her LL.B. from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom and a post-graduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law.
