At least six people are feared dead after a boat they were traveling in capsized in Lake Victoria on Friday night. 

Bunyala OCPD Jefferson Nyakundi on behalf of a multi-agency team, Kenya Navy and Kenya Coast Guard, 13 passengers on the ill-fated boat were on their way from Sigulu Island in Uganda to Sisenye beach in Kenya when the boat capsized. 

“The boat was coming to Port Victoria from Sigulu island in Uganda when it capsized near Khanete island. The currents were very strong in the lake and the boat had overloaded. It had thirteen people, twelve passengers and its driver,” he said.

Seven of the passengers were rescued and rushed to Port Victoria Hospital where they are undergoing treatment.  

According to the Daily Monitor, Mr Asavia Mawanda, the Officer-in-Charge of Marines on Sigulu Islands. 

“The overloaded boat was hit by a strong wave, causing it to sink.” 

Mr Mawanda identified the victims as Evans Okumu, a businessman from Bugoma Village who was also the owner of the boat; Bridget Erumbi, 11 and Carlos Wanyama, 2. 

Others are David Mukuhu, who the coxswain of the boat, Sabastien Akuku, a farmer at Rabachi Landing Site in Sigulu West and Loyce Odembo, a fish trader.
