Kenya Railways Monday announced the resumption of the Madaraka Express passenger service.
This follows President Uhuru Kenyatta’s announcement on the easing of restrictions on movement in three counties; Nairobi, Mandera, and Mombasa.
The Madaraka express on SGR operates between Nairobi and Mombasa ferrying passengers.
“We wish to inform the public that the Ministry of Transport and Kenya Railways in conjunction with the SGR operator, Africa Star Railways Operation Limited, will be releasing a new operational schedule in due course,” Philip Mainga, Managing director said in a public notice.

In April 2020, the Kenya Railways announced that all SGR passenger services would remain closed until further notice after President Kenyatta ordered the cessation of movement in and out of Nairobi Metropolitan Area, Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale counties.
Late June, Kenya Railways introduced a subsidised tariff for customers using the Madaraka Express Freight Service from Mombasa to Naivasha.
Freight charges were reduced from $600 to $480 for a 20-foot container and from $850 to $680 for a 40-foot container.
This was to be in place for 90 days.
However, this is going to be impacted after the Ministry of Transport suspended the directive on the use of standard gauge railway (SGR) for all inbound cargo to be transported via SGR.
