The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has postponed the Afro-Asia Fintech Festival 2020 (AAFF 2020) to next year citing health concerns.
The event had been scheduled for 13-14 July 2020, but it will now take place in July 2021.
“The postponement follows careful consideration by the co-hosts, CBK and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) and the utmost importance of the health and safety of the festival participants,” said the CBK on Tuesday.
“However, the spirit of the AAFF will be kept alive in 2020 through virtual events.”
In 2019, Kenya hosted the first Afro-Asia Fintech festival, featuring over 1500 participants from 45 countries.
The festival was the first of its kind in the region, seeking to explore sustainable financial services innovations from emerging Afro-Asian markets; a partnership between CBK and the Singaporean Monetary Authority, and the launch of the Global Fintech Hackcelerator in Kenya.
Kenya’s Kwara and Uganda’s Bureau Vente won the hackathon and received platforms to showcase their innovations globally.
