Kenya’s National Emergency Response Committee on Covid-19 has ordered malls, eateries, restaurants to close in response to the rising number of positive cases Wednesday.
Announcing the measures Wednesday, Kenya’s Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe also announced the extension of the partial lockdown in Eastleigh and Old Town in Mombasa until June 6.
“The restaurants and malls are to remain closed until then,” Kagwe said during his briefing on Wednesdays.
“Today (Wednesday) we have the highest number of positive coronavirus cases, 66 cases, Mombasa continues to be a challenge. Thirty of the 66 cases reported today are from Mombasa,” said Kagwe.
On May 6, the government locked down Eastleigh and Old Town as coronavirus cases rose.
The latest restrictions come as the Covid-19 cases rose to 1,029 the biggest daily jump since the start of the outbreak.
The positive cases are from 2,621 samples tested in the past 24 hours. Cumulatively, 49,405 samples have been tested.
366 patients have recovered after eight more were discharged Wednesday from the hospital. Despite the growing infections, the fatality rate remains at 5.6 percent against the global average which is 6.6 percent. The country has reported 50 deaths.
Kenya is already under extended national dusk to dawn curfew and the cessation of movement into and out of Nairobi Metropolitan, Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, and Mandera to June 6.
