Human rights and criminal litigation lawyer Christine Nkonge, has been named executive director of Katiba Institute.

She replaces Waikwa Wanyoike following his departure in September 2018.

Prior to taking over as the acting ED, she was the Senior Litigation Counsel/Public Interest Litigation Manager in charge of the litigation team.

“We are delighted that Christine has accepted the offer. The appointment became effective on 1st June 2019,” announced Katiba Institute on its website.

Very excited by decision of @katibainstitute Board to appoint @gakii_nkonge as Executive Director. Christine is a solid strategic litigator – a lawyers' lawyer – as we call her. She brings great all-rounded competence .. but also grace.

Christine joined Katiba Institute in 2014. Her former immediate employer was the International Justice Mission  (IJM) Kenya.

Her interest in constitutionalism began through her work within the criminal justice system and the systemic shortcomings that she observed which she believes could have been addressed by fidelity to the constitution.

“I am therefore humbled by this opportunity but at the same time excited for the chance to lead KI in assisting citizens, stakeholders, development partners, and government institutions in realizing the full potential of a transformed Kenya that respects the rule of law, social justice, good governance and human rights,” says Christine.

Christine holds a Masters degree in law from Central European University; a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi.
