Holiday Travel Season Made Easy on Madaraka Express

Kenya Railways has introduced a night service on the Nairobi to Kisumu route and dropped the day train every Friday and Sunday.

To make your travel experience as smooth as possible this festive season, the standard gauge railway (SGR) passenger service will feature 5 additional coaches on the Madaraka Express train between Nairobi and Mombasa.

“From Dec 14 – Jan 2, 2019, Madaraka Express Passenger Service will feature 5 additional coaches in the morning train from NRB and afternoon train from MS,” Kenya Railways Corporation Tweeted Thursday.

“The afternoon train from NRB and the morning train from MSA will feature 3 additional coaches. The changes apply to the economy class,” it added.

Currently, it pulls nine coaches (1,062 passengers) on economy-class tickets and two coaches (138 passengers) on first-class tickets.

It charges KSh3,000 for first-class coaches and KSh1,000 for economy-class coaches.

Travellers using the Madaraka Express can book, pay or cancel tickets by dialling a USSD code ( *639#) from any phone, including a feature phone.

Passengers can also book their tickets over the internet following the introduction of the online booking system by the Kenya Railways Corporation.

The platform enables customers to purchase a maximum of five tickets per transaction and pay via M-Pesa.
Upon payment, the customer will receive a transaction confirmation message via phone with an option to check the ticket status online.
