My therapist said we need to see people being happy. When I say therapist, you know I mean Tiptop, right? In the spirit of being happy, I went out.  Well, two pepperoni pizzas for the price of one, count me in! Mercy has a really welcoming smile, the kind to make you buy extra wings. I’m the kind to eat the same thing over and over until I’m bored.  One thing my ex taught me is always to have a backup plan. Mercy suggests I try the Hawaiian. Does pineapple belong on pizza? Of course, the seat at the furthest…

There’s something about Tuesday classes. Monday, we soothe the blues, but Tuesday, we get ready to start the week, plus the classes start at 10:00 am, with zero pressure.  As the class representative, I get to school early, collect the signing sheet, get a venue, and communicate with my classmates about that day’s agenda.  I can’t help but notice the low turnout; we started as a class of 70, and two years later, we are now 55. Whenever I introduce myself as a literature student or mention that reading is my hobby, people marvel or ask if I may recommend a book. My favourite question is, “What was the last book you read (Normally, I read three books at a go; one self-help, one romantic fiction, and what I like to call “heavy fiction,” primarily books on slavery, mental health, and the LGBTQ+). Answering these questions is more challenging than it looks, at least not to me. Anyway, do you want to ‘start your reading culture’? Worry no more because you know what? I’ve got you covered!…

Mental health matters have been making the rounds over the past few years. A lot of us are now aware of what ailments such as depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety is.  My favourite part is how we have embraced talking about mental health, campaigns, seminars, podcasts, and the cherry psychiatrists, therapists, and counsellors using social media to educate and share tips for survival.  But first, let us identify common mental health issues in Kenya. The World Health Organization’s 2017 report on the world mental health situation ranked Kenya fifth among the African countries with the highest number of depression cases.  In addition,…
