East Africa Breweries Plc (EABL) has announced a 50% reduction in its payout to shareholders, from Ksh. 11 to Ksh. 5.50 per share, due to a drop in earnings to Ksh.12.3 billion for the full year ended June 30, 2023. The company attributes the 21% decrease in earnings to high taxes, reduced disposable income, and inflation. Bunyore Assasins and Ebwali Boys from Vihiga County won their semi-final matches last weekend to advance to the finals of the Safaricom Chapa Dimba grassroots tournament. Bunyore Assasins outlasted Bumunyange Forces 5-1 and Ebwali Boys took down Chavakali Boys by 2.0. The two will play their finals Sunday at Maseno Polytechnic. Samsung on Wednesday unveiled the fifth generation of foldable smartphones; Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5. The new foldable phones use Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and are IPX8 rated for water. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 has a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED cover screen with a 60Hz refresh rate, and 720×748 resolution at 306 ppi. The education sector reported the highest rate of ransomware attacks in 2022, according to Sophos, a global leader in cybersecurity. In the report titled, “The State of Ransomware in Education 2023”, over the past year, 79% of tertiary educational institutions and 80% of lower educational organizations surveyed reported being hit by ransomware. The sector also reported one of the highest rates of ransom payment, with more than half of higher institutions paying the ransom. Kenya’s Parliament is seeking to amend the Central Bank Act to allow the establishment of a Shariah-compliant monetary policy.
