The Nairobi Expressway is now officially open, which means you can enjoy smooth rides along the 27.1-kilometre road between the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Westlands.
The road starts from Mlolongo, passes through the JKIA, along Mombasa Road through Nairobi’s CBD to the James Gichuru junction along Waiyaki Way.
The Expressway plays a crucial role in decongesting the city and boosting Kenya’s economy by saving millions of shillings lost in traffic every year. However, being a toll road, one needs to pay to use it, and for this, you can either pay electronically or through cash.
You will need to register for the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) service from the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to pay electronically. You will be issued a card for fast and easy transit through the Expressway. The ETC offers a convenient way to pay for the road as it provides you with non-stop passage through the toll gates.
The ETC service allows toll points to be electronically deducted through the pre-installed On-Board Unit (OBU) device. To acquire the ETC card, you will be required to produce your ID cards and the vehicle’s logbook as proof of ownership.
You can also use the Manual Toll Card (MTC) to pay for the Expressway. The MTC can also be topped up electronically and get points which will be deducted whenever you use the road. However, you need at least 2,000 shillings to get your first toll points, which are only valid for one year.

Standard Chartered is one of the banks mandated to collect the toll fees in the new Nairobi Expressway. This means that you can top up your OBU or the MTC directly from the SC Mobile App or through Online Banking.
How to Top Up Your OBU or MTC Using the SC Mobile App or Online Banking
To top up your on-board unit (OBU) or Manual Toll Card directly on the SC Mobile app or Online Banking, follow these steps:
- Log into your SC Mobile app or Online Banking
- On the menu, select Payments, then select One Time Bill Payment
- Under Biller Type, select Toll Road, and then under the Biller Name, select Nairobi Expressway
- Under Top-up type, select OBU or Card
- Enter your 16-digit OBU number or card number, then your passport or ID number registered with the Nairobi Expressway
- Confirm your OBU or card number and ID/passport number
- Confirm all the information you have keyed in and confirm the payment.
