Kenya’s legal community mourns the passing of Senior Counsel Judy Thongori, a pioneering figure in family law. Following a recent illness, she passed away in India while undergoing treatment.
Dr. Fred Ojiambo, Chairperson of the Senior Counsel Bar (SCB), confirmed her demise, describing her as a “passionate and compassionate advocate.”
He emphasized her profound impact, stating, “Judy was the country’s foremost authority in family law, recognized for her invaluable contributions, culminating in her placement on the Law Society of Kenya’s (LSK) Roll of Honour.”
Founded in 2003, Judy Thongori & Company Advocates, specializing in family law matters such as matrimonial disputes, child custody, and succession, established a strong reputation under Thongori’s leadership. Beyond her legal expertise, she was a respected mentor, guiding and inspiring younger generations of legal professionals.
Thongori played a pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s legal landscape, particularly in family law. She was a trained family mediator, accredited by the Judiciary, and a key contributor to the establishment of the Family Division of the High Court of Kenya.
Her influence extended to legislative reforms, with significant contributions to the drafting of both the Matrimonial Property Act and the Marriage Act.
Conferred the rank of Senior Counsel in 2020, Thongori was among the few women to achieve this prestigious title in Kenya.
In 2013, she became the first woman inducted into the LSK Roll of Honour, a testament to her exceptional contributions to the legal profession.
Beyond her legal practice, Thongori actively engaged in public service. She served on the Chief Justice’s committee for establishing the Family Division and the Bar-Bench committee. In 2023, President William Ruto appointed her to a committee addressing radical religious groups.
Thongori’s commitment to justice extended beyond the courtroom. She provided legal advice and awareness both locally and internationally and actively mentored aspiring legal professionals.

President William Ruto described Thongori as an “exceptional advocate and champion for justice,” emphasizing the profound impact of her work on Kenyan society. The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President, Faith Odhiambo, lauded her as “a monument of legal prowess,” acknowledging her enduring contributions to family law and human rights.
The judiciary, legal professionals, and civil society organizations across the country have expressed their deep sorrow and paid tribute to her significant contributions to the legal profession and the advancement of women’s rights.
