Carrefour Kenya says it will close its store at Kisumu Mega Plaza Mall on November 30, 2024. The decision, part of a strategic review, is expected to result in job losses for a section of the retailer’s employees.

In a notice to suppliers, Carrefour stated that the closure is aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of its operations in Kenya.

“We are writing to inform you of an upcoming change regarding our Carrefour Mega Plaza Mali store in Kisumu,” read the notice in part.

“After careful consideration, we have decided to close this location, effective November 30, 2024.”

“We will continue to work closely with you to ensure a smooth transition and minimize any disruptions. We encourage you to contact your respective Category Manager to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.”

A separate notice to employees from the Director of Sustainability & HC-EA, Maisa Galat, outlined plans to reassign affected staff to other Carrefour stores in the region. Employees with questions are advised to contact their Human Capital Manager.

Carrefour’s Kisumu Mega Plaza Mall store opened in 2021, taking over a space previously occupied by Tuskys.

The retailer’s expansion strategy in Kenya has involved acquiring spaces vacated by struggling chains like Shoprite, Nakumatt, and Uchumi.
