Quickmart, a Kenyan retail chain, is set to leap into the digital realm by launching its new e-commerce platform, Q-soko.

This strategic move positions Quickmart to tap into the rapidly growing online shopping market in Kenya.

The retail chain aims to attract a substantial customer base of around 1 million monthly shoppers through Q-Soko, offering a convenient and efficient online shopping experience.

“Right now as Quickmart we are serving an average of 5 million customers every month we will be looking to serve at least 20 per cent of these on the e-commerce,” retail chain chief marketing officer Betty Wamaitha said.

To enhance customer satisfaction, Quickmart has partnered with delivery services like Glovo and Uber Eats, ensuring seamless and timely delivery of products.

The launch of Q-soko aligns with the broader trend of e-commerce growth in Kenya. The country’s e-commerce penetration is projected to reach a significant 53.6% by 2025, indicating a rising preference for online shopping among Kenyan consumers.

According to Knight Frank’s  Kenya Market Update for the 1st Half of 2024, the convenience-driven behaviour of modern consumers, coupled with reduced disposable incomes and the rise of e-commerce, has prompted retailers to re-evaluate their outlet locations to enhance overall customer satisfaction.

Quickmart’s entry into the e-commerce market adds to the competitive landscape, which already includes established players like Jumia, Glovo, Uber Eats, Yum Deliveries, and even traditional retail chains like Carrefour.

While Kenya lacks specific e-commerce regulations, recent legislative changes have addressed certain aspects of the digital landscape, including data protection and copyright.

The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) has also highlighted the need for further regulatory clarity and guidance in the e-commerce value chain.
