The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) has launched the 2nd edition of Loop Forum Kenya, an event focused on driving the circular economy within the country.

The Loop forum provides a platform for collaboration, policy discussions, and showcasing innovative solutions that address environmental and social challenges.

What is the Circular Economy?

The circular economy aims to eliminate waste and pollution, keep products and materials in circulation, and regenerate natural systems.

It presents solutions to pressing issues like climate change and biodiversity loss while addressing social needs.

Kenya’s Commitment to Green Growth

During the 2023 African Climate Summit, President William Ruto emphasised the potential for economic growth through green initiatives.

Principal Secretary Festus Ng’eno of the State Department of Environment and Climate Change highlighted his ministry’s focus on ecosystem restoration, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and implementing a circular economy.

Kenya’s Waste Management Challenge

Kenya faces a substantial waste management issue, generating approximately 8 million tonnes annually.

“This translates to 22,000 tonnes daily, with each Kenyan contributing half a kilogram of waste on average,” stated Ngeno. Excess waste contributes to pollution and environmental degradation.

The Danish Minister for Environment, Mr. Magnus Heunicke, emphasised the need to develop a systemic circular economy for a sustainable world.

“Humans have spent centuries developing skills to harvest resources from our environment. As you also know, this has put our planet under much pressure, leading to biodiversity challenges. The challenges facing us are many, and the answers are simple; we need to use our resources over and over again, reduce our consumption and footprint, and develop a systemic circular economy for a more sustainable world,” noted Mr Heunicke.

LOOP Forum Kenya is an annual multi-sectoral platform catalyses circular innovation, policy dialogues, and business-to-business collaborations.
