Peter Ndegwa, the CEO of Safaricom, has been inaugurated as the second Chancellor of the Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST), marking the start of his five-year term.
He succeeds Dr. James Mwangi, the CEO of Equity Group Holdings Plc, who served as the first chancellor for ten years.
Ndegwa’s appointment emphasizes the university’s commitment to enriching its academic programs and innovation through industry expertise and collaboration.
In his acceptance speech, Ndegwa expressed his honour and dedication to advancing the university’s mission.
“As I embark on this new journey, I am filled with a sense of purpose and dedication to advancing the mission of Meru University of Science and Technology. I am excited about the opportunity to work collaboratively with the university’s leadership, faculty, students, and the broader community to build upon the strong foundation of academic integrity and innovation and lead our university to new horizons.”
“That is a task I wholeheartedly embrace and to which I will devote myself with great passion and energy in the years to come,” Peter Ndegwa remarked in his acceptance speech.
Prof. Romanus Otieno, the Vice-Chancellor of Meru University of Science and Technology, welcomed Ndegwa with enthusiasm.
He praised Ndegwa’s leadership acumen and dedication to transformative change, as evidenced by his illustrious career at Safaricom PLC, a leading African communications company.
Otieno also commended Ndegwa’s commitment to using technology to address societal needs and his visionary leadership at Safaricom.
Dr. James Mwangi, the founding Chancellor and CEO of Equity Group, extended his warm welcome and full support to Ndegwa.
He expressed confidence that Ndegwa would continue to uphold the vision and mission of the university.
“I have no doubt that he will continue to keep alive the vision and mission of this institution, more so in building on the foundation of academic excellence, innovation, and a commitment to societal impact,” said Dr. Mwangi.
Meru University of Science and Technology, established as a full-fledged university after receiving its charter on March 1st, 2013, continues to foster a culture of innovation, research, and academic excellence.
