The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has dismissed a message circulating on social media that claims the authority is taxing till numbers.
The message is fake and has no basis, the authority said on the X platform. “Till numbers are NOT subject to taxation, and KRA does not collect any such taxes,” the post said.
The authority has also warned Kenyans to be wary of fraudsters who are posing as KRA and demanding taxes on till numbers and other Lipa na M-PESA services.

According to Business Daily, KRA is seeking to track mobile money transactions in real-time to catch tax evaders, but not to tax till numbers. KRA is interested in monitoring the 16 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) on sales and the 20 per cent excise duty on transactions.
In September, KRA deployed 1,400 revenue service assistants with paramilitary training to help enforce tax compliance among traders.
