Showmax, MultiChoice’s streaming platform, has announced that its Showmax Pro package will be phased out by November 30, 2023, as the service prepares for a relaunch.

Introduced in July 2020, Showmax Pro bundled existing Showmax entertainment content with music channels, news, and live sports streaming from SuperSport.

However, with the upcoming relaunch, the service’s sports offering will focus exclusively on the English Premier League.

As part of the planned changes, Showmax Pro will no longer be available for subscription from October 1, 2023.

“From 1 October 2023, Showmax Pro will no longer be available for subscription. If you have an auto-renewal subscription, you won’t be charged after 30 October 2023, and you can continue to view until the last day of your subscription,” Showmax said in a statement.

Customers who have set their accounts on an auto-renewal subscription will not be charged past October 30, 2023.

Existing subscribers in select markets will be able to stream even more live sports from SuperSport with an exclusive DStv Stream and Showmax bundle deal.

This includes access to even more live sports from SuperSport including the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, UEFA Champions League, and additional sports like the NBA, NFL and UFC.

DStv Stream packages are currently available in 10 African markets: South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Botswana, Namibia, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The relaunch follows a statement made in March 2023 where MultiChoice Group announced a partnership with Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky.

The partnership aims to bring world-class content and technology to streaming customers across MultiChoice’s 50-market footprint in sub-Saharan Africa, aligning with the continent’s increasing broadband connectivity and affordability.

“The new Showmax group will be 70% owned by MultiChoice and 30% by NBCUniversal. It will build on Showmax’s success to date and aim to create the leading streaming service in Africa,” MultiChoice stated in the update to the group’s shareholders in March 2023.

In Nigeria, NBCUniversal will hold an indirect 23.7% stake in the local subsidiary.
