In the 2023 Safaricom Chapa Dimba Nyanza region championship, Obunga FC and Plateau Queens, both hailing from Kisumu County, emerged as the victors.

Obunga FC claimed the regional title after a heated match against Awendo Academy from Migori at Moi Stadium in Kisumu, ending with a 2-1 victory.

Tyson Muluri scored the first goal for Obunga FC in the 45th minute through a penalty after Duncan Omalla was fouled. Shortly after, Clain Masaba scored the second goal. Awendo Academy managed to score a consolation goal in the 92nd minute by Elvis Odhiambo.

Amos Ochieng, Coach of Obunga FC, expressed his delight at their victory and gratitude towards Safaricom for their role in nurturing football talent. He also mentioned that their journey is far from over as they now prepare for the national championship.

Plateau Queens secured their second regional Chapa Dimba title by defeating Victoria Sports Academy 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time. Velma Atieno and Sheila Awuor were the goal scorers for Plateau Queens and Victoria Sports Academy respectively.

Both Obunga FC and Plateau Queens had qualified for the regional final after defeating Nyaguku FC and Kisii Queens respectively.

Similarly, Awendo Academy and Victoria Sports Academy reached the finals after defeating St. Peter’s Wagai and Ageng’a Girls respectively in the semi-finals.

As champions of the Nyanza region, Obunga FC and Plateau Queens each received KES. 250,000 and will represent the Western region in the National finals next year.

The runners-up, Awendo Academy and Victoria Sports Academy, each received KES. 150,000.

The Safaricom Chapa Dimba Nyanza region tournament featured a total of 530 teams (412 Boys’ teams and 118 Girls’ teams) and aims to provide a platform for scouts and coaches to discover new talent. The tournament targets footballers aged between 16 and 20 years old.

With the Nyanza Region tournament concluded, Safaricom Chapa Dimba will next head to the Eastern Region.
