Nzoia United staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Ulinzi Stars 2-1 in their 2023–24 Football Kenya Premier League season opener at Sudi Stadium on Saturday. 

The hosts trailed by a goal at halftime. However, Nzoia rallied in the second half and scored two goals in quick succession to secure the three points.

The win propelled Nzoia United to the top of the league table with a superior goal difference.

In other matches, Kariobangi Sharks and Police FC played out a goalless draw at Utalii Grounds, while Tusker FC edged out Bandari FC 1-0 at Mbaraki Stadium. 

Deogratious Ojok scored the only goal of the game in the 77th minute to give the Brewers a winning start to their title defence. 

Defending champions Gor Mahia and Sofapaka FC also shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Kasarani Stadium. 

Darius Msagha gave Sofapaka the lead towards halftime, but Gor Mahia equalized through Benson Omalla’s penalty.

Sunday Fixtures

The FKF Premier League action will continue on Sunday with four more matches. 

Posta Rangers FC will face Bidco United FC at Kasarani Stadium. Only four points separated Bidco United and Posta Rangers last season as they finished 13th and 12th respectively.

AFC Leopards will take on FC Talanta at Nyayo Stadium. AFC Leopards are unbeaten in the league against Talanta. The two teams have met each other four times since Talanta’s promotion back in 2021 with Leopards winning twice. 

Nairobi City Stars will host Muhoroni Youth at Kasarani Annex. City Stars finished in 15th place, five points above Muhoroni who won a relegation/promotion playoff tie to secure survival. Kwangware-based City Stars won both encounters against their soon-to-be visitors last season to extend their current winning streak in this fixture to four. 

Shabana FC will clash with Muranga Seals at Homabay Stadium. Less than two months on from an intense top-of-the-table clash that blew the National Super League title race wide open promoted sides Shabana FC and Murang’a Seal are set for another high-octane duel.
