Samsung on Wednesday unveiled the fifth generation of foldable smartphones; Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5.

The new foldable phones use Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and are IPX8 rated for water.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 has a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED cover screen with a 60Hz refresh rate, and 720×748 resolution at 306 ppi.

The unfolded screen increases to 6.7 inches having a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate 2640×1080 resolution and a 22:9 aspect ratio.

Galaxy Z Flip5 sports a 10MP front camera. It has dual 12MP lenses with OIS.

Samsung has used a 3,700mAh battery in Flip5. The charger is not included in the box. The Flip5 comes in two variants starting with 8GB RAM and up to 512GB internal storage.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 operates on One UI 5.1.1 based on Android 13 out of the box.

Galaxy Z Fold5 gets a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED cover display having a refresh rate up to 120Hz. The cover screen has a 2316×904 resolution and a 23.1:9 aspect ratio.

The main display is 7.6 inches large with 2176×1812 resolution, a 21.6:18 aspect ratio and an adaptive refresh rate of 120Hz.

The Fold5 has a 10MP selfie camera on the cover display and the under-display lens is 4MP. There are dual 12MP ultrawide cameras on the rear along with a 50MP main lens and a 10MP telephoto sensor.

Samsung has incorporated a 4,400mAh battery in Fold5 that also doesn’t have a charger inside the box. The phone comes with S-Pen support as well.

The Galaxy Z Fold5 starts with 12GB RAM and up to 1TB of space. It operates on the same version as Flip5.

Availability and Price

The Recommended Retail Price for the Galaxy Z Fold5 is 325,000 Kenya Shillings for 512GB and 193,000 Kenya Shillings for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 256GB

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 will be available for pre-order in select markets from July 26, with general availability starting August 11th. Galaxy Z Flip5 lets users express themselves with colours including Mint, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender, as well as a range of accessories.

Galaxy Z Fold5 is available in Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream, along with a variety of cases that offer practicality and style including a Slim S Pen Case, Clear Gadget Case, Eco-Leather Case, and a Standing Case with Strap.

Global foldable smartphone market

In Q1 2023, global foldable smartphone shipments grew by 64% YoY, reaching 2.5 million units despite a 14.2% YoY decline in the overall global smartphone market during the same period.

Growth in the foldable smartphone market was largely driven by the domestic foldable market in China, which surged 117% YoY to 1.08 million units.

This growth occurred despite a decline of 8% YoY in Q1 2023 in the overall smartphone market in China.

These figures demonstrate the increasing popularity of foldable smartphones and their potential for continued growth in the future.
