Safaricom will invest Ksh400 million in season four of the Chapa Dimba football tournament, which will officially kick off on 3rd June after a two-year hiatus.

Season 4 of the tournament was launched on Saturday at Camp Toyoyo Grounds in Jericho, Nairobi.

“We are proud to announce the return of Chapa Dimba na Safaricom after a break due to the coronavirus pandemic. As a firm we have invested KSh400 million in the fourth edition of this competition which has played a big role in the growth of football in the country,” said Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa.

“This year, the tournament is coming back in a bigger and better way, as we aim to promote the sport even further, especially among girls.

“We look forward to forging deeper connections with our customers and showcasing our commitment to transforming lives.”

The third edition of the tournament was halted in May 2020 due to a coronavirus pandemic.

Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom is a national football tournament for male and female youth aged between 16-20 years.

The tournament aims to transform the lives of young people by giving them a platform to showcase their talent and an opportunity to earn from their passion.

The Numbers

Safaricom said it has doubled the prize pool from Ksh 10 million to Ksh 20 million to also reward the winning teams at the county level, in addition to the ones at the regional and national levels.

“We have also included additional prize money at the national finals, which will see the most disciplined team take home Ksh 100,000, while the Best Girl player, Girls’ Top Scorer and Girls’ Best Keeper will take home Ksh 50,000 each.”

The launch was also graced by Football Kenya Federation President Nick Mwenda and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, and Makadara Member of Parliament George Aladwa.

Safaricom Chapa Dimba aims to provide a structured platform for scouts and coaches to tap into new talent and build feeder systems for the Kenyan leagues across the country, while also training a total of 250 coaches.

The best football players, 2 boys and 2 girls will be scouted during each of the regional finals, to form an All-Star team and get an opportunity to visit Spain for a 10-day training boot camp, with two players (boy and girl) getting international placement in a youth team in Spain.

Safaricom Chapa Dimba season four officially kicks off on June 3 and will run until January 14, 2024.

Others include Tusker forward David Majak, Jentrix Shikaangwa (Simba Queens), Eric Zakayo (Tusker), Boniface Omondi of Gor Mahia, Harambee Starlets ace Judith Osimbo among other players.

The tournament will be open to both boys’ and girls’ teams. It will kick off with a national registration exercise from 1st May 2023 in Nairobi, Eastern, Western, Nyanza, Rift, Coast, Central, and North Eastern regions.

Each team will comprise 15 players and 2 officials for the group stages.
