Transsion Holdings, a Hong Kong-based mobile phone manufacturer, will discontinue the sale of 4G devices in the Kenyan market.

Infinix Brand Manager Shane Liu says the decision is based on the growing adoption of 5G technology and consumer preference for more innovative products with more efficiency.

“We place great importance on understanding the needs of our young customers and are dedicated to incorporating innovative technologies into our mobile phone development. With the HOT 30 series, we’ve equipped these devices with powerful gaming processors, ample memory, lightning-fast charging capabilities, and the most vivid high-definition screens,” said Shane as quoted by the Star during the launch of HOT 30 series.

5G in Kenya

In Kenya, 5G phones include the Huawei Mate 30 Pro and P40, Nokia 8.3, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2, and Samsung Galaxy S21 Series.

According to the Communications Authority of Kenya, 5G can support up to 1 million connected devices per square kilometre compared to 4G which can only support up to 100,000 connected devices in a similar area.

This makes 5G suitable for providing super-fast internet speeds in high-density areas and linking thousands of connected devices in health, manufacturing and supply chain.

Kenya has nearly 300,000 5G phone users as of the end of 2022 according to data from CA.

Safaricom rolled out its 5G network in Kenya in 2022, the second country in Africa after  MTN and Vodacom in South Africa.
