Safaricom Plc grew its fixed internet market share to 46.1 per cent for the second quarter of the year that ended December 31, 2022, statistics by the Communications Authority show.

The number of data subscriptions in the telecom increased from 22,148 to 372,872, making it the leading data provider.

Safaricom attributed the growth to investments in fixed internet connectivity across the country.

Safaricom is followed by Wananchi Group (Kenya) Limited, with 251,340 subscribers (31.1 per cent ), and Poa Internet Kenya Ltd., with 120,168 subscribers (14.9 per cent), Liquid Telecommunications Kenya, 17,837 (2.2 per cent); Mawingu Networks Ltd., 14,951 (1.8 per cent); and Dimension Data Solutions East Africa Limited, 13,950 (1.7 per cent), among others.

The total utilised undersea bandwidth capacity grew by 5.5 per cent to 6,467.36, of which 4,361.54Gbps was used in the country and 2,105.82 Gbps was sold outside the country.

Mobile subscriptions

In addition, Safaricom Plc maintained its lead regarding mobile subscriptions, accounting for 63 per cent of mobile subscribers in the country, followed by Artel at 17.6 million, Telkom at 3.06 million, and Equitel at 1.52 million.

The Communications Authority noted that mobile subscriptions increased to 65.7 million compared to 65.5 million in the previous quarter.

“During the reference period, the rate of subscription rose significantly, hitting a penetration of 133.1 per cent,” CA said.
