The former Manchester United forward put the Portuguese ahead from the spot in the second half to become the first player in history to score in five different World Cups.
The first half was characterized by each side taking chances but not breaking the deadlock.
Things changed after the break with both sides creating chances up until the 65th minute when Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu was adjudged to have tripped Ronaldo in the area. The 37-year-old took the resultant penalty to put the former European champions ahead.
Andre Ayew would draw the Black Stars level from close-range just eight minutes later and set a thrilling finish to the match.
Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix would restore the lead three minutes later with a perfect lob over Ghana’s goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi before substitute Rafael Leão’s tidy right-footed finish all but confirmed the three points.
Substitute Osman Bukari lept highest inside the penalty area to head home and give the Black Stars belief.
A nervy moment in the final minute saw Inaki Williams almost pull Ghana level when he pinched the ball from Portugal’s goalkeeper Diogo Costa but could not put himself in a position to find the net.
The result puts Portugal on top of Group H with three points ahead of their clash against Uruguay, while Ghana will be taking on South Korea, who played out a barren draw against the South Americans.
