Enner Valencia scored twice to steer Ecuador to a decisive win over Qatar in the World Cup opening match

The South Americans started the match brightly, with the former West Ham forward causing problems for the hosts and had a goal ruled out for offside.

Valencia would soon have his moment when he was fouled in the area and opened the tournament by scoring from the spot.

Ecuador continued their dominance in the match, and Valencia doubled the lead in the 31st minute with a superb header that left Qatar’s goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb with no chance.

The hosts become the first-ever nation to lose a World Cup opener and will be looking to make amends in their second group match against the Netherlands, who take on Senegal on Monday at 19:00 EAT.
