Kenya Airways plans to resume direct flights to New York from its hub in Nairobi in December 2022.
In February, the carrier reduced the flight frequency on the route to three per week from five after demand subsided following last year’s festive period.
“We continuously monitor demand trends which guide our decision to increase or decrease frequencies on this or any other destination. In the case of JFK (New York’s main airport), we will increase frequencies to daily during the festive season in December,” said the airline.
The higher demand is a positive signal for the tourism sector, for which the US remains the largest overseas source market accounting for 16% of the 870,465 arrivals into the country last year.
The Tourism Research Institute (TRI) data for January to August this year, arrivals from the US grew 65 per cent to 139,828.
KQ narrowed its half-year loss to KES 9.8 billion from a KES 11.5 billion loss posted in the same period last year, attributed to increased revenues.
