Uber has enhanced its safety toolkit with additional features to give Kenyan riders more options to be safe about their ride.
As ridesharing becomes a way of life for more people, Uber says it never stops raising the bar on safety and has rolled out a new safety feature, Safety Check Up.
Based on research, most riders seem unaware of the safety features available to them, which contributes to a lack of confidence in the app’s safety.
The Safety Check-up across Sub-Saharan Africa encourages riders to complete their safety profile by turning on and utilising the available features such as Trusted Contacts, PIN verification, and Ride Check.
The Safety Check-Up feature will encourage riders to complete their safety profile by turning on and utilising the Trusted Contacts, Verify My Ride and RideCheck features available in-app.
According to Imran Manji, Head of East Africa, the tools are designed to improve the safety of the Uber platform:
Trusted Contacts: Riders can choose their Trusted Contacts in the app and set reminders to share their trip details.
Verify My Ride: Riders can opt-in to receive a unique PIN that will automatically be sent to their driver for wireless verification. The driver will only be able to begin the trip once the correct PIN is verified.
RideCheck: Using sensors and GPS data, RideCheck can help detect if a trip has an unexpected long stop or a possible crash. If Uber notices such events, they will check on both the rider and driver and offer resources to help.
In addition, Imran said they have fully launched its cab-hailing services in four towns: Eldoret, Nakuru, Naivasha and Kisumu.
Uber is now available in eight cities across East Africa, which means more drivers have access to earning opportunities and more riders, an affordable, convenient, and reliable travel solution throughout the region, at the tap of a button.

More economical options for riders
To help reduce riders’ costs and increase driver demand, Uber launched Uber ChapChap Share in Kenya. Uber’s shared rides offering allows riders to save up to 30% of the trip fare when matched with a co-rider heading in the same direction, and where a match is not possible, they will still be able to save 5% from their ride.
Travelling across the city with an entire crew has never been easier with the launch of UberXL in Nairobi, Kenya. This option provides seating for up to six people, which is great for airport and business trips where extra luggage space may be required.
