Telkom Kenya has announced the completion of 4G/LTE network expansion to Kenya’s Coast and Lower Eastern region.

The network is now accessible across the coastal region of Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and Taita Taveta. Makueni, Machakos, Kitui, and Kajiado counties are also covered in the lower eastern part.

The expansion is part of plans that Telkom Kenya, along with its partners, Ericsson, and systems integrator NEC XON, announced in November 2021.

Telkom says it will add 2,000 4G sites onto Telkom’s Mobile 4G/LTE Network by 2023 at an estimated cost of $100 million.

“We remain committed to better position our infrastructure asset base and services to drive digital transformation within our various customer segments. Thus, providing them with more value and bridging the digital divide through expanding our Mobile Data Network,” Telkom Kenya’s CEO, Mr Mugo Kibati, says.

“We remain cognizant of our mobile data network’s integral role in keeping our customers connected. We are on course with our long-term terrestrial network expansion plan, which will see us scale up to 80% of our network to 4G.”

Telkom has 4,152 km of terrestrial fibre cabling, serving as a critical conduit for inland broadband connectivity. Telkom Kenya owns a 22.5% stake in The East African Marine System (TEAMS), a 5,000km undersea fibre optic cable through Fujairah, UAE.
