The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has withdrawn the corruption case against former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa.

Mwendwa had been charged with embezzling 38 million shillings ($337,000) from the government and other sponsors. In addition, conspiracy to defraud the FKF of about $254,000.

Mwendwa had denied all the allegations against him.

On Wednesday, Nairobi Anti-Corruption chief magistrate Eunice Nyuttu dropped the case after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) failed to produce any witnesses or evidence.

“I hereby discharge Mwendwa under section 87 (a) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) for failure by the DPP to avail evidence before this court,” Nyuttu said.

In November 2021, the Ministry of Sports, through Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, dissolved the FKF office led by Nick Mwendwa and appointed a caretaker committee that took charge of football activities in the country.

Consequently,  FIFA suspended Kenya in February over government interference in the running of the sport.
