Nzomo Mutuku, who led the Retirement Benefits Authority in Kenya from 2000 through 2022, steering its growth in the retirement benefits industry, has died, the company said Sunday.

He was 53.

RBA said he was instrumental in founding the Authority.

Nzomo initially headed the Research and Policy function and rose to the CEO position in June 2018.

“He has also made an invaluable contribution to the growth of the Retirement Benefits industry in Kenya, the region and internationally. His demise is a big loss to the family and the financial sector,” the obituary read.

Mr Mutuku also worked at the National Treasury as the acting director of financial and sectorial affairs, where he was charged with the financial sector’s development and sectoral issues.

Before that, he worked at the RBA for 12 years as the chief research and development manager.

Mr Mutuku holds a Master of Arts degree in Economics, a First Class Honours Bachelor of Arts (Economics) degree from the University of Nairobi, and a Certificate in Digital Money from Tufts University.

He has authored several papers on financial sector issues, including “the Case for Consolidated Financial Sector Supervision in Kenya“ and “the Impact of the Global Financial Crisis on the Pensions Sector in Kenya”, widely quoted in the region.
