Safaricom on Tuesday said it has appointed Karen Basiye as Director, Sustainable Business, Social Impact and M-Pesa Foundation.

“In her new role, Karen takes on additional responsibilities as the Executive Director, M-Pesa Foundation, and will continue to lead Safaricom’s purpose agenda as well as our sustainability, corporate social investment (Safaricom Foundation and M-PESA Foundations) and technology for development initiatives,” the telco announced on its official LinkedIn page.

Karen brings on board over 17-years’ progressive experience in Environment Management, Sustainability Management, Social Policy, True Value measurements and Social Impact. 

She joined Safaricom in October 2008 from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) as the Environmental Compliance and Policy Manager.

In 2011, she took on the role of Senior Manager – Sustainability, where she was instrumental in delivering Safaricom’s first and subsequent Sustainable Business Reports as well as ensuring that Safaricom was among the first companies to adopt the SDGs when they were launched.

In 2021, she was appointed as Head of Sustainable Business and Social Impact where she has spearheaded the development of an integrated purpose strategy.
