Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Thursday announced the second phase of its unique program — “Futuremakers”.
This is an initiative that takes a systemic approach to supporting disadvantaged young women and young persons with disabilities in the labour market, through the provision of demand-led technical skills training, employability training, career guidance, and job placements.
In 2020, StanChart launched the pilot program, in partnership with Light for the World.
“Following this successful pilot programme, we are investing USD 850K to expand the 2nd phase. The lead strategic partners will be Sight Savers International and Light for the World. This will be a two-year programme running from 2022 to 2023,” Joyce Kibe, Head of Corporate Affairs said.

During the first phase, they reached 4,805 students out of which 244 live with disabilities. 683 students received structured in-depth work readiness skills through interactive online learning sessions.
In addition, 7 career talks were conducted reaching over 1,600 students through employee volunteering. As a result, 50 students got an opportunity to job shadow in Meru County and The Action Foundation Kenya.
Joyce says they target 4,290 beneficiaries in the current phase which will focus on Lifting Participation for young people living with disabilities.
Sight Savers International will implement Inclusion Works which focuses on building the employment readiness and self-confidence of 790 job seekers with disabilities over a two-year period.
Speaking at the launch, CEO Kariuki Ngari stated, “The Futuremakers Inclusive Employability programme is an employability programme that will help young people become job-ready by building knowledge, skills, increasing their confidence, self-esteem, and aspirations.”
“Futuremakers programme by Standard Chartered empowers the next generation to learn, earn and grow through 3 pillars- Education, Entrepreneurship, and Employability.”
Since the launch of Futuremakers by Standard Chartered in 2019 they have been able to reach 19,600 people through its Education programme – Goal.
“We will work with 6 universities to empower students by building their employability skills through training, mentorship, and industry exposure. We have included Masinde Muliro University to give students in Western Kenya an opportunity to participate,” Ngari disclosed.
