The first phase of the ultra-modern Jamhuri Sports Ground was opened on Friday 25 March 2022 by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The sports complex located in Woodley, Nairobi, consists of three football grounds, a rugby pitch, and two running tracks.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, President Kenyatta said, “This place is 100 percent free of charge. You will not be required to pay any money to use it.”

As part of the opening ceremony, the President, accompanied by Sports Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohammed, watched football and rugby exhibition matches pitting Harambee Stars veterans vs a combined team of Kibera Academy and Kibera United players, and Shujaa vs Lionesses respectively.

Construction works at the ground, formerly known as the Telkom Sports Ground began in August 2020 and is estimated to have cost Ksh 609 million.

It will additionally have a police post, two ablution blocks, food courts, changing rooms, play areas, and two picnic sites.
