Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya, the greatest marathoner of all time, on Sunday won the Tokyo Marathon in 2:02:40. In the women’s race, world record holder Brigid Kosgei, 28, won in 2:16:02, the third-fastest marathon of all time.

Kipchoge’s win was the fourth-fastest marathon time in history.

Kipchoge led a Kenyan one-two finish with Amos Kipruto coming home second in 2hrs, 03mins, 13secs as Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola finished third in 2hrs, 04mins, 14secs.

“Kipchoge’s performance is the fourth-best ever behind his own world record of 2:01:39 set in Berlin in 2018, while Kosgei’s is a time that only she with her world record of 2:14:04 from Chicago in 2019 and Paula Radcliffe with her 2:15:25 from London in 2003 have ever beaten,” the World Athletics Organisation writes.

Ashete Bekere of Ethiopia was second in 2:17:58 while Gotytom Gebreslase completed the podium places in 2:18:18 as five women went 2:19:10 or faster.
