Magical Golf Kenya Open Returns at Muthaiga Golf Club in March

The 53rd edition of Magical Kenya Open hosts the DP World Tour, formerly the European Tour returns at Muthaiga Golf Club starting 3rd to 6th of March.

The tour will bring together 156 golfers (150 pros and 6 amateurs) who will compete for the $ 2 million prize in this year’s championship. 

Kenya will be represented by 8 pros and 6 amateurs in the 4-day event.

‘’The event has now been changed from the European tour to DP world tour, so the DP World tour is the ones who have made the changes in the winner’s prize money,”  the Kenya Open Limited Chairman Peter Kanyago said Friday when they received Ksh 250 million cheque from the Ministry Of Sports, Culture & Heritage and Sports Fund Kenya. 

‘’I am glad to report that preparations for the tournament are in the final stages. I have also received the assurance of the organisers that stringent measures have been put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 during the event,” Sports Cabinet secretary Amina Mohammed said.

“Our pristine and world-class golf courses have ensured that we have hosted golf giants since 1967, who have displayed their skills on the Kenyan soil, she added.

Spectators allowed

The 2022 DP World Tour edition will mark the first time it has visited the prestigious Muthaiga Golf Club – which was established in the 1920s – after Karen Country Club.

Spectators will be allowed in but stringent Covid-19 checks will be observed at the venue.

“This year we shall have a pseudo bubble. Although we shall not limit the number of spectators, we shall have full protocols on social distancing, testing and mixing,” said Tournament Director Patrick Obath.

“With live global broadcast coverage across four days, the Magical Kenya Open is a great opportunity to promote Kenya as a golf destination to the world and support Kenyan golf. The event will be produced for live TV coverage across four days with the world feed being distributed all over the world,” he said.

Justin Harding claimed the 2021 Magical Kenya Open title courtesy of a two-stroke triumph over American Kurt Kitayama, with the South African winning for the second time on the European Tour and eighth time overall on the African continent, having seven Sunshine Tour victories already to his name.
