Justice (Rtd.) Violet Mavisi has been appointed as Independent Lead of the Company’s Operational Level Grievance Mechanism (OGM) of Kakuzi Plc. 

Ms Mavisi, a former presiding Judge of the Interim Independent Constitutional Dispute Resolution Court (ICDRC) will be expected to provide impetus to the firm’s ongoing efforts to maintain human rights management standards.

The Operational Grievance Mechanism (OGM) provides a systematic and transparent process for receiving, investigating, and addressing company-related grievances from affected communities, workers, farmers who supply avocados through Kakuzi’s economic empowerment program, and other relevant stakeholders.

Kakuzi Plc Managing Director Chris Flowers said the firm had used its OGM experts to identify and validate the appointment.

Ms Mavisi, also a former Vice Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR)- Flowers said, will spearhead the functional rollout of the Kakuzi OGM.

“At Kakuzi, we are pleased to welcome aboard Ms Mavisi as the new Independent SIKIKA OGM Head. In this role, she will lead a dedicated team ensuring the effective rollout of the OGM process.” Flowers said.

He added that Kakuzi Plc was ‘doing the right thing’ means investigating every complaint related to its business, focusing on facts and providing an appropriate and accountable remedy for those cases where evidence indicates that harm was done.

Ms Mavisi is a lawyer with over thirty years of experience in civil and criminal assignments. She holds a law degree from the University of Nairobi and a Masters of Arts degree in Governance and Development from the University of Sussex.

She is also a Chevening Fellow. She has worked in the public service as a prosecutor with the Attorney General’s Chambers, as the First Vice-Chair and Commissioner with the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and as a Presiding Judge with the Interim Independent Constitutional Court. She has also worked in the private sector as an advocate and also in the Non-Governmental sector.

Mavisi is currently an Independent consultant in the area of Human Rights, Governance, Gender and Health.

In 2021, Kakuzi announced the appointment of an Independent Human Rights Advisory Committee (IHRAC) in a trendsetting move chaired by former Attorney General Prof Githu Muigai.

The committee provides independent technical advisory to the firm’s Board of Directors, guaranteeing sustainable compliance with global human rights principles across the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) listed firm’s operations.
