Hungary are out of Euro 2020, but produced a battling performance in their Group F finale, holding Germany to a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena.
It took just ten minutes for the game to explode into life, with Hungary taking a shock lead through Ádám Szalai who stole a march on Mats Hummels to get on the end of an inch-perfect Roland Sallai cross and head beyond Manuel Neuer.
Germany rallied back and were gifted a goal – and a Euro 2020 lifeline – when Gulácsi flapped at a cross to allow Hummels to head goalwards, with Kai Havertz on hand to tap in from close range.
However, Hungary hit back straight away, with a fraught German defence allowing András Schäfer in behind to nod beyond the onrushing Neuer for 2-1.
The white wall of Hungary’s defence looked comfortable containing a limp German attack, until substitute Leon Goretzka thumped a loose ball home from 12 yards in the dying minutes.
It was enough to send an underwhelming Germany through to the last 16, and a clash with England at Wembley Stadium.
