AC Milan’s chase for the Serie A title suffers blow after being held to a 1-1 draw by Sampdoria at the San Siro.

Milan started the game knowing that a win would send them to within two points of league leaders Inter Milan who travel to Bologna.

The visitors dominated the match with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma being called to action to deny efforts from Manolo Gabbiadini and Morten Thorby’s header.

Sampdoria eventually opened the scoring in the 57th minute when veteran striker Fabio Quagliarella lobbed the ball from a distance and caught Donnarumma out of range.

It was Quagliarella’s tenth goal of the season which took him to 174 Serie A goals making him the highest scorer alive in the Italian top-flight.

The visitors would then be reduced to ten men when Adrien Silva received a second yellow for a foul on Samu Castillejo.

The hosts rallied on in the final minutes and had their efforts rewarded when Norwegian midfielder Jens Petter Hauge was fed by Franck Kessie to pull a goal back from Milan.

In other matches, Napoli survived a spirited effort by Crotone and won 4-3 in Naples while Sassuolo played out a 2-2 draw with AS Roma.

Nine men Lazio got a 2-1 win over Spezia while Genoa and Fiorentina drew 1-1 with both teams finishing the match with ten men.
