• Mohammed Salah opened the scoring in less than a minute for Liverpool in their final group encounter
  • Alexander Scholz got a deserved equaliser with second half penalty as Midtjylland improved
  • Takumi Minamino saw opportunistic late strike ruled out by VAR following handball by Sadio Mane inside

Liverpool laboured to a 1-1 draw in their final Champions League group match before advancing to last-16.

Liverpool went ahead in the opening minute through Mohammed Salah who bundled in an effort after being given an early opportunity to run clear of the Midtjylland defence.

The goal also saw Salah become Liverpool’s greatest Champions League goalscorer with his 22nd strike for the club.

The hosts pulled a goal back in the second half as Alexander Scholz converted from the spot-kick.

Scholz would hit the net again minutes later but his effort would be disallowed for an offside offence.

Jurgen Klopp’s side would face the harsh reality of the VAR deep into the match.

Liverpool sprang an attack with Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane combining to tee up Minamino, who smashed in from eight yards. His joy was short-lived however, as a flag was raised.
