Barcelona put five past minnows Ferencvaros before Gerard Pique was sent off.

Barcelona got back to winning ways with a comprehensive win over Ferencvaros, beating them five goals to one.

Lionel Messi made it 16 seasons scoring in the Champions League with the goal that got Barcelona’s European campaign under way.

Messi’s spot kick was his 116th Champions League goal – only Ryan Giggs has scored in as many consecutive seasons in the European Cup – and it put Barcelona ahead before Ansu Fati and Philippe Coutinho added a second and a third.

The visitors started well and had the ball in the net after Tokmac Nguen broke clear and finished well but he had started his sprint the wrong side of the last defender and the flag was raised.

Isael then smashed a shot against the crossbar after Nguen had played him in. Barcelona responded and Messi slalomed into the area and tripped over David Siger’s leg. Denes Dibusz dived the right way but Messi’s penalty was low and hard and Barça had the lead.

They doubled it just before the break when Ansu Fati made it five goals for the season, clipping Frenkie de Jong’s lofted pass over the top of Ferencvaros’ defence, past Dibusz.

But their win was marred by a red card for Gerard Pique that will rule him out of Barcelona’s trip to Turin to face Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus next week.

Barcelona can now sit back and see how Real Madrid fare on Wednesday. On Saturday they are back at the Camp Nou to face their domestic rivals. This was a more than satisfactory warm-up.
