Big Square, a fast-food retail chain, opened its second branch outside Nairobi, in Eldoret, at Rupa’s Mall. 

This brings the total number of stores operated by the retail chain to 12. It has 10 stores operating in Nairobi, and one in Mombasa. 

Big Square has branches in Westlands, Karen, Lavington, Gigiri, Kilimani, Thika Road, Lang’ata, Ngong Road and Mombasa Road.

“On matters expansion, the current pandemic has affected the hospitality industry. Even as we work on increasing our footprint in Nairobi and out of Nairobi, we’re taking caution on when and where we open new outlets,” said Carolle Kariuki, Marketing Manager Interstrat Ltd, which owns Big Square. 

According to Cytonn Investments, Eldoret has remained an attractive investment area for retailers. This is supported by positive demographics with Eldoret having a population of 475,715 an increase of 64.4 percent, from 289,340 in 2009.

In addition, a growing middle class, improving infrastructure, and availability of retail space with Uasin Gishu, where Eldoret is the main town, having a total retail supply of 0.9 mn SQFT.

“In terms of retail sector performance, Eldoret recorded an average rental yield of 7.9 percent, 0.9 percent higher than the market average of key towns in Kenya at 7.0 percent,”  according to Cytonn Investments’ 2019 Retail Performance in Key Urban Cities in Kenya.
