Two Cuban doctors, who were abducted by Al-Shabaab from Kenya’s Mandera County in 2018 have been released.
The two, Assel Herrera and Landy Rodríguez, a physician and an orthopedic surgeon had been deployed to Kenya in 2018 before the incident.
Bruno Rodríguez, Cuba´s foreign minister, via his Tweeter feed confirmed their release and thanked the Somali government for its help.
Rodríguez said he had spoken with Somalia´s foreign minister, Ahmed Isse Awad.
“I had a telephone conversation with the Foreign Minister of Somalia Mr. Ahmed Isse Awad. I appreciated the support and efforts of your government to guarantee the safe return of our kidnapped doctors. We highlight the will to strengthen bilateral ties between the two governments.”
